Aryeh and Nechama Cheses receive award from the Shul, presented by Ronny DrapkinThis morning when I went to get my haircut at the barber, I was stunned to realize how grey my hair has turned. I guess the job, family, and kids can do that.....oh yeah, and age; age can do that to!

I also realized that even though I don't feel old, I've been at Boston a long time. It has been twelve years since I came here for my residency and fellowship training.

It is also twelve years that I've been at the Adams Street Shul. During that time, I've learned that in ALL synagogues there are always a group of individuals and families that make up the glue, the 'special sauce', that keep things moving. Whether it is by attending all services; hosting families, guests or friends for meals; serving on the shul board or committees, changing light-bulbs, setting up kiddush or seudat shlishit, or even taking out the garbage....these people are vital to the fabric of each shul.

And like most shuls, the Adams Street Shul is fortunate to have some of these members too. Unfortunately, the efforts of these individuals are overlooked, sometimes taken for granted, or simply under appreciated. And yet, things would come to a standstill if not for their effort and devotion.

Tonight, I am delighted that we are honoring a family that epitomizes these qualities and values. They have served the shul selflessly for decades – they attend all services, have served on the board in many capacities, including President, help with kiddush set-up, 3rd meals, hospitality, programming, and have been true friends to many of us.

They really are true pillars of the community and have left an indelible imprint on the history of this shul. I am happy that we are finally honoring Nechama and Aryeh Cheses for all that they have done and continue to do for our community.

Aryeh and Nechama, we are lucky to have you as members and friends. I know that I speak for all of us when I say that we wish you the best for your plans to spend next year in Israel but that we will also miss you dearly for all that you do and for all that you are.

Please join me in extending a Mazal tov to the Cheses' family on this award.
