shabbat lunch second meal cholentThis coming Shabbat, Rabbi Yaffe, who was Chattan Torah last Fall, will prepare two festive cholents (one meat and one vegetarian);  and Steven Jaffe, who was Chattan Bereishit, will prepare a diverse assortment of delicious delicacies;   and Rabbi Weinberg, who is observing his mother's yahrzeit this Shabbos, will supply the wine, challah, rolls, and other necessaries. 

Since this is also the last Shabbos before Rabbi and Susan Weinberg leave for a vacation in Israel, this is also a "bon voyage"


Fleischmann BenyominThe Synagogue Council of Massachusetts's annual meeting of Synagogue Presidents will be held at Adams Street this year, from 9 AM to 12 noon this Sunday. 

This will be followed by a historical tour of the shul, beginning at noon. 

The shul's regular monthly Board Meeting has been moved to Monday night, January 12th, at 7:30 PM.

Hollender, MorrisWith sadness we report the loss of our dear friend (and great layner) Morris Hollender.  Morris was a frequent davener at Adams Street, where he served as the chazzan of our Heritage Shabbat program.  He was also the featured speaker at our 2011 Holocaust Commemoration event.

Shiva will be observed through Tuesday, January 6, at Evans Park (430 Centre Street, Newton, MA).  Visiting hours each afternoon are from 3 to 6 pm, and each evening (except Friday) beginning with a minyan service at 7:30


Daughters Of Israel MikvahThe Daughters of Israel presents learning programs designed to accomodate the varied backgrounds and schedules of the married women of the Greater Boston Jewish Community.

Presenters include Mrs. Chaya Durani,  Mrs. Nechama Prus,  Mrs. Bassie Wilhelm,  Mrs. Rochel Leah Rodkin,  and Mrs. Tova Rabinowitz.

Five different weekly courses are offered on different days of the week, all related to the laws of Shalom Bayit and Family Purity.

Your choice of course may depend on your preference for a


KnightFamilyThe community extends condolences to Tim and Nancy Knight, and to their extended families, on the loss of Nancy's father, Marty Goldstein, grandfather of Elana, Ariella, and Sarah Knight.  As Nancy has reported, “Marty Goldstein passed away at age 92 from heart failure.  He loved life and filled his days with listening to and playing (sax and bodhran) music, inventing things, writing poetry, working as a receptionist in his building, singing in the chorus, and most of all loving his family.”  May


We have split our newsletter into two.  The schedule of candlelighting and services will now come each Thursday morning, while community news about members and events will continue here as before.  

All subscribers to this newsletter have been subscribed to the new Thursday calendar mailing too, but you can manage your subscriptions independently if you want just one or the other.

challotThe kiddush for Shabbat Chanukah at Adams Street Shul was a sit-down affair, with tasty food, inspiring words of Torah, and wonderful conversation. Thanks so much to:

Rabbi Shlomo Yaffe for making delicious cholents;
